Glycemic Diets

Glycemic diets are a tool for people to manage their blood sugar levels. Not only is it a tool for diabetics, but it can help others in perfect health to lose weight. There are several glycemic diets that can lead to weight loss. The reduction in carbohydrates and increase in protein leave people satiated. This controls appetite and absorbs more slowly. Glycemic diets reduce consumption of processed carbohydrates, but allows whole-grain carbohydrates. Instead, there is a focus on eliminating white, processed carbohydrates.

South Beach Diet

    The South Beach Diet is a glycemic diet. The goal is to reduce carbs and only eat healthful carbs. The South Beach Diet has three phases. The goal is to reduce cravings for processed and refined carbs and sugar. The first phase is strict, with the majority of carbohydrates coming from vegetables and small amounts of foods such as beans and sweet potatoes. Phase two allows you to add in more foods that contain carbohydrates. Phase three is the maintenance phase that allows healthy carbs in moderation. The South Beach Diet emphasizes healthy fats and lean protein.

Atkins Diet

    The Atkins Diet was the glycemic diet that spurred a low-carb revolution. The majority of the foods are fat, protein and fiber. The Atkins Diet is higher in fat than the other glycemic diets. As the carbohydrates are low and fat and protein content is high, hunger is vastly reduced. One of the issues with the Atkins Diet is that keeping energy levels high with low carbs can be difficult.

The Zone Diet

    The Zone Diet is more rigid than the other glycemic diets. The idea is to balance blood sugar and lose weight by eating small amounts of protein and snack throughout the day. In addition, certain carbohydrates, such as most vegetables, fruits and lentils should be eaten with the protein. In contrast to the Atkins Diet, the Zone Diet is lower in fat. Good fats, such as olive oil, are allowed in moderation.

Sugar Busters Diet

    The Sugar Busters Diet helps you lose weight by adding protein and fats, which reduces sugar cravings. Eating more fiber is encouraged as well. Sugar Busters involves eating whole grains, fruit and high-fiber vegetables and lean protein. The food eaten on this plan should be low in fat. Paying attention to eating and not eating at certain times, such as bedtime, is required.
