Foods to Give a Person With Low Blood Sugars

People who have perpetual low blood sugar levels suffer from hypoglycemia. It usually occurs in people who are being treated for diabetes, or on occasion, those with pre-diabetes, who have insulin resistance. Symptoms of low blood sugar include nervousness, sweating, intense hunger, trembling, weakness, palpitations, and trouble speaking. The management of hypoglycemia involves food sources that help to normalize the persons blood sugar levels.

Soda

The only time that sugary soda is recommended for your health is if you suffer from hypoglycemia. When a person is looking for a rapid delivery of easily absorbed sugar, soda will do the trick.

Fruit Juice

The nice thing about fruit juice is that it doesnt take much to increase your blood sugar levels. All you need is a half cup of the juice of your choice (orange, cranberry) and your blood sugar should rapidly stabilize.

Life Savers

In this case, the circle candy known as Life Savers really does live up to its name. If you suffer from low blood sugar levels, keep a pack of Life Savers candy in your pocket or purse. Eat about eight pieces in order for the sugar to increase your blood sugar levels.

Raisins

Not all food choices have to be candy. Just two tablespoons of raisins are enough to help stabilize blood sugar levels. Moreover, raisins are a healthy snack. While the antioxidant activity in grapes is higher, when they are dried, the phenols found in raisins still have some activity that helps prevent oxygen-based damage to cells in your body.

Sugar

Thats right, just simple table sugar is an easy way to remedy an episode of low blood sugar. Two to three teaspoons will do the trick. Spoon it into a cup and take a swig, or it may be more convenient to buy a pack of sugar cubes and pop a couple when an emergency arises.

Starch and Protein

If you experience a low blood sugar incident at a time when you dont plan on eating a meal or snack for more than 30 minutes, eat foods that contain starch and protein after you have taken a sugar-source and begin to feel better. Foods with starch and protein can help prevent another reaction.
