Foods to Avoid With High Blood Sugar Levels

If you have high blood sugar levels, watching your diet is especially crucial to maintaining good health. Your elevated blood sugar levels may be the result of diabetes or pre-diabetes, or they may be higher than normal because of illness, such as the flu. Whatever the cause, you should try to avoid foods with a high glycemic index. The glycemic index measures how quickly carbohydrates in foods cause your blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise. So if you already have high blood sugar levels, the last thing you want to do is fuel those levels with foods that tend to cause blood sugar levels to soar.

Soda

A 12-ounce can of soda can have more than 15 teaspoons of sugar, which is guaranteed to cause a spike in your blood sugar. In addition, an average soda has about 250 calories. But they are empty calories, which means they have no protein, fiber and other nutrients that would provide any health benefits at all.

White flour

White flour, such as that used in bagels, white bread, pretzels and similar products, isn't especially healthy for anyone, regardless of blood sugar levels. The healthy benefits, such as fiber and nutrients, have been stripped away (which is why you are always encouraged to eat whole-grain products instead). In addition, white flour converts easily to sugar in the body, which means that even if the product does not taste sweet, your body treats white flour like sugar, and your blood glucose levels will pay the price.

Snack and breakfast foods

In addition to pretzels, mentioned above, many snack foods are high on the glycemic index scale. They include everything from candies such as Skittles and M&Ms to seemingly harmless foods, such as Graham crackers, corn chips, rice cakes, other types of crackers and breakfast foods like donuts, muffins, croissants and waffles

Some fruits

While fruits such as grapefruits, apples, oranges and even bananas are considered low- or mid-glycemic index foods, others such as watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple, and vegetables such as potatoes (baked, French fried and mashed) are among the higher glycemic foods that are part of our daily diets. If you have high blood sugar levels, you should absolutely talk with your doctor and/or a nutritionist to see what foods to avoid, at least until you levels are under control.

Hidden Sources of Sugar

Manufacturers are getting very clever at masking sugar on the ingredients label. When you read a label, don't just look for words like "sugar" and "corn syrup." Remember that sugar also comes in forms labeled "sucrose," "fructose," "glucose" and "maltodextrin."
