Erupting Volcano Models for School Projects

Erupting Volcano Models for School Projects

Volcanoes are mountains built from erupting lava, rocks and ash. The sheer size and spectacle of volcanoes make them an interesting subject for students of all ages. In order to understand how pressure can build inside a volcano and cause it to erupt, kids can make erupting volcano models for school projects with everyday materials often found in households.

Paper Mache and Tissue Bomb Volcano

A volcano made with paper mache can be used to create an eruption with vinegar and a tissue paper bomb. After constructing a cone shape over an empty 2 liter bottle with newspaper strips and paper mache, the volcano is allowed to dry before it is decorated with poster paints or other materials. Once the volcano is placed in a safe location, vinegar is added to the bottle. A tissue paper bomb consisting of baking soda wrapped in a square of tissue paper is added to the mixture to begin the eruption process.

Mentos and Poster Board Volcanoes

A volcano made of decorated poster board, a 2 liter bottle of soda and Mentos creates a spectacular eruption that should be performed in a large open outdoor space. This type of volcano consists of a poster board cone placed over a full 2 liter cola bottle. Once the volcano is finished, Mentos are dropped inside the bottle to create an eruption.

Clay and Baking Soda Volcano

Another volcano model popular with school age children is a clay and baking soda volcano. An empty 2 liter soda bottle is covered with salt dough, modeling clay or modeling compound. Once the volcano has dried or is ready to use, it is placed in a location that can get messy. Baking soda is placed in the empty bottle to begin the eruption process. Once vinegar is added, the creator stands back to watch the eruption begin.
