Diet Supplements & Whole Foods for Adrenal Exhaustion

Adrenal fatigue is a condition whereby your body can no longer produce adequate amounts of the adrenal hormones, such as cortisol. This occurs where the adrenal glands are chronically overstressed from prolonged abuse of stimulants, improper sleeping cycles or exposure to excessively stressful situations. Correcting adrenal fatigue can help you to regain control over your life, improving energy levels and mood.

Dietary Approach to Curing Adrenal Fatigue

If you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, you will have to make some dietary adjustments to optimize your ability to recover. A natural, balanced diet will offer your body the best environment for healing, reducing latent stress on your system. Base your diet around consumption of lean proteins, healthy fats, and carbohydrates that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index is a list that ranks carbohydrates according to how quickly they are digested, with items such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains being fairly slow to be absorbed by the body, thus making them ideal sources for lasting energy with minimal effect on blood sugar or body composition. Quality protein sources include seafood (especially important as seafood contains ample quantities of healthy omega-3 fats), chicken, turkey and low-fat cuts of beef. Your ideal fat distribution should be a minimal intake of saturates with a much greater intake of unsaturates. Natural saturated fats, as from items like coconut oil, are generally best for your body. Maximize your consumption of omega-3 fats through ample intake of seafood and use of an over-the-counter fish oil supplement. Other quality fats include almonds, avocados, walnuts, peanuts and olive oil. Avoid consumption of all processed foods, caffeine, white flour items, sugars and calorie-containing beverages.

Supplement Approach to Curing Adrenal Fatigue

A B-vitamin complex should form the backbone of your supplement strategy. Taking a daily vitamin containing B5, B6 and niacin can help you heal adrenal fatigue as all three vitamins are involved in production of adrenal hormones. Other vitamins that are recommended for dealing with adrenal fatigue include vitamins C and E. Supplementing with DHEA can also help alleviate some symptoms of adrenal fatigue. DHEA is a chemical normally processed by the adrenals, which will be present in lessened amounts during periods of fatigue--thus, supplementing with additional DHEA can help remove stress from the glands, allowing them to devote their energies to recovery. Five to 25 mg taken daily is a fairly standard dose. Also ensure that your body is receiving ample supply of trace minerals such as magnesium, zinc, iodine, copper and selenium. Finally, consider an herbal remedy such as rhodiola rosea. Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogenic herb, which means that it helps to balance the body's systems, allowing it function to closer to its ideal levels.
