California State Education Standards for the 4th Grade

To ensure that each student in the state of California receives the same quality education, the California Department of Education, in conjunction with teachers, administrators, parents and students across the state, developed minimum academic standards which each student must work towards while in the California educational system. Though the areas in which students must study are the same across grade levels, each grade has its own specific goals and objectives.

English Language Arts

    Students will develop vocabulary and speaking skills necessary to translate written words into spoken language. Students will be able to read, comprehend, analyze and evaluate grade-level appropriate text. Suggestions of grade-level appropriate texts are provided in selected works such as Recommended Literature and Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve. Students will organize, compose and revise structured papers by hand and with a computer or word processor. Student essays will respond to literature and will emphasize comprehension of the text over analysis and other higher-level thinking skills. Students will also compose short stories, poems and other short works. Students will deliver short speeches and develop note-taking skills to employ during oral presentations.

Mathematics

    Students will add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals --- up to two places. Students will simplify and solve equations with one or two variables. Students will be able to calculate the perimeter of an area using basic geometry. Students will generate survey questions and translate the survey findings into statistical data. Students will understand how to approach word problems.

Health and Physical Education

    Students will comprehend and analyze the importance of proper diet and exercise. Students will identify positive and negative social and familial influences in their lives. Students will practice communicating with peers and superiors. Students will practice goal-setting. Students will determine how best to stay healthy and active. Students will engage in athletic activities appropriate for their body and locomotor development such as jumping rope, kickball and volleyball. Students will engage in warming up and cooling down activities prior to and following athletic activities.

History and Social Sciences

    Students will analyze and describe the historical, sociological and geographic composition of the state of California. Students will analyze and describe the relationship between California, the American West and Southwest and Mexico, including a detailed analysis of the age of exploration and imperialism. Students will analyze the role of state and national government as it pertains to the governance of California.

Science

    Students will analyze the uses and functions of electricity in everyday life. Students will identify the components necessary for plant and animal life to survive. Students will grow small plants such as bean sprouts and care for small animals such as frogs and turtles. Students will study the ways certain rocks and minerals are formed and how they develop over time. Students will engage in experiments wherein they ask guiding questions, make critical hypotheses and test their hypotheses against collected data.

Art

    Students will engage in the analysis and practice of simple dances. Students will practice simple instruments such as recorders and small xylophones and learn basic songs such as "Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star." Students will memorize a series of simple lines and recite them in a staged performance. Students will paint and sculpt using traditional materials such as oil-based paint and sculptor's clay.
