Brittle Diabetes Diets

Brittle diabetes is a type of uncontrolled type 1 diabetes. People who suffer from brittle diabetes have a difficult time controlling their blood sugar levels and often have extreme glucose level swings throughout the day. Following a strict diet that normalizes the blood sugar levels is extremely important for brittle diabetics, as they may otherwise go into a coma from their uncontrolled diabetes.

Glycemic Index

Following a low glycemic index (GI) diet is crucial for maintaining normal blood glucose levels. Foods that are acceptable include non-starchy vegetables, lean meats, legumes and berries. Avoid white potatoes, sugar and white flour at all costs, since these foods make blood sugar spike and drop dramatically.

Alcohol

Alcohol is processed much like fat calories. Brittle diabetics who abuse alcohol may have trouble with their glucose levels. If you do consume alcohol, drink it along with low-GI meal. This will help stabilize your blood sugar.

Low Carb

Some brittle diabetics follow a low-carb diet, such as Atkins or the South Beach Diet. Both diets eschew starches and sugar while promoting natural, unprocessed food. Following a low-carb diet can help people who are very sensitive to carbohydrates get their diabetes under control.
