Activities for Integrated PE

Activities for Integrated PE

Integrated physical education involves using learning activities in physical education. This allows educators to train the student's body and the mind at the same time. Developing activities that can be both intellectually and physically stimulating may be one of the more challenging aspects of teaching in this way. With a little creativity and some traditional physical activities, you can create a number of lesson plans.

Healthy Foods Activity

Integrate music and movements such as skipping and hopping, along with activities related to healthy eating. Create some food cards, which you can easily do by making flash cards with the name of a food written on each. Use picture cards for younger children. Divide up the class into two teams, having each team stand in single file at the end of a basketball court. Scatter food cards on the floor in the middle of the court. At the other end, tape signs to chairs that read "everyday foods" and "sometimes" foods. Everyday foods include healthy items that make up the daily diet, while sometimes foods include candy, chips and other junk foods. Start the music and call out an activity such as skipping. Each student must do the activity as they proceed to the cards. Each team sends one player at a time. Each player proceeds to the "everyday" or "sometimes" food goal at the other end while skipping. The team with the most correct answers wins.

Musical Hoops

For this game, scatter hula hoops around the gym or outside in an area designated for class. Use one hoop for each student. Each hula hoop contains a card with a specific activity on it such as jumping jacks, push-ups and various stretches. Each student stands at a starting line and proceeds to a hoop of her choosing when the whistle blows. Before blowing the whistle, call out a number between 10 and 20. Require students to use fun movements such as hopping on one leg or crawling on all fours. When a student arrives at her hoop, she reads the activity and completes the required number of repetitions. The last student to complete the activity is out of the game. Repeat the sequence until all but one student has been eliminated. This activity is ideal for grades three through five.

Math Cones

Math cones integrate mathematics with physical activity. You need multiple cones for this game, perhaps as many as 50. Write a number on each cone. Place the cones randomly on a basketball court or soccer field. Start on one end of the field. Place math cards randomly on the other end on the ground or in a large bucket. Each math card has a math problem printed on it without the solution. Direct each student to dribble either a basketball or soccer ball with his hands or feet when the whistle blows. Each student dribbles to the opposite end of the field or court, picks up a math card and solves the problem by proceeding to the cone with the correct answer. To make the game more challenging, require each student to carry the math card as he dribbles to the correct cone with the other hand or with the feet. The student with the most correct answers wins.
