When it comes to working out, often the only hindrance to those that want to get in shape is learning the mechanics, or rather, learning the "how" of a good workout. Don't despair. Learning exercise techniques, form and even gym etiquette can make your hour of exercise very productive as you work out at the gym.

Determine what your fitness goals are. Think about this even before you set foot into the gym. This will help you avoid wasting time and doing any unnecessary exercise routines.
2Find the machines that you will use on a regular basis, note their location in the gym and learn their proper use. This will help you avoid any injuries.
3Set your goals at a reachable and reasonable pace to keep from getting discouraged as you workout. For example, set a goal to lose 6 pounds this month or to build 4 pounds of muscle. If you set your goals at a realistic level, you are more likely to achieve them.
4Exercise first on the cardio machines to get the heart rate going and to get a sweat going. This cardio prep will get the muscles warmed up and ready for the weights.
5Lift weights no less than 3 to 4 times weekly, alternating between upper body and lower body workouts, including abdomen muscles on each workout day. There is no minimum amount of time to spend on the weights, just as long as each muscle is being worked to fatigue.
6Work out at a minimum of 4 times a week to see results. This includes cardio and weight lifting.
