What Kind of Fruits Are Low in Carbs?

Fruits are a part of a healthy diet and should not be eliminated with any type of weight-loss program. However, if you are trying to cut down on carbohydrates, some fruits contain more carbs than others. For healthy weight loss, keep those lower-carb fruits a staple in your daily diet. The combination of proper eating habits and exercise will help you drop pounds. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Red Currants

This delicious fruit comes in three colors; black, red or white. The black ones are used for preserves while the white and red ones are used to eat out of hand. A cup of red currants has only 31 calories and 8 grams of carbohydrates. Currants are commonly used in baked good recipes. Substitutions include raisins, chopped soft prunes and chopped dates.

Blackberries

A half cup of blackberries contains 37 calories and only 9 grams of carbohydrates. The blackberry is the largest of the wild berries and is either served raw or in many baking recipes. Blackberries ripen from May through August and are best if used immediately. They can be stored in the refrigerator for one to two days, and should be single-layered and covered with lightweight material such as a napkin.

Passion Fruit

This fruit is native to Brazil, but the most commonly used variety in the U.S. is egg-shaped and 3 inches long. As a fully ripened fruit, it is dimpled and has a deep purple skin. The inner fleshy part is soft and golden and contains several tiny edible seeds. The passion fruit season is between March and September. This fruit is best served fresh; however, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days. One medium passion fruit has 18 calories and 4 grams of carbohydrates.

Grapes

Many think of either the red or green grape but thousands of varieties grow around the world, classified in two categories: European or American. According to Food.com, "the average person eats 8 lbs. of grapes a year, and the best-selling grape in the U.S. is the Thompson Seedless." Ten seedless grapes contain 36 calories and only 9 grams of carbohydrates.
