    Eat a small bedtime snack. When we are not eating our livers are producing sugars. A typical condition with diabetics is an overactive liver especially when asleep. This extra sugar finds its way into the blood stream and gives a higher blood-sugar reading in the morning. Adding a small snack containing carbohydrates can help. Ideal snacks can include bananas, milk, fruit or yogurt.

    Add a small amount of evening exercise. This doesn't have to be strenuous or even have to break a sweat. A 20-minute evening walk can help the body burn off some excess sugar and waste.

    Monitor the elapsed time since eating or drinking anything besides water. For a measurement to be considered a fasting blood sugar reading, it needs to be taken no sooner than three hours after you last ate. Although breakfast is generally around eight hours since eating, many people forget and have that glass of fruit juice or coffee before they test their blood sugar. This can greatly affect the blood-sugar levels.

    Check your levels during the night. This applies mainly to diabetics on insulin but it can happen to others. Sometimes the blood sugar can drop too low during the night, which sends the liver into panic mode. It responds by pumping out extra amounts of sugar, sending your fasting blood-sugar level through the roof.

    Reduce your evening stress. Stress causes the liver to create more sugar which will stay with you until the morning. Exercise is one method, but any stress-reducing method you are familiar with is fine.
