Crafts to Make for Your Dad

Crafts to Make for Your Dad

Whether it's Father's Day, Dad's birthday or a just-because gift, your dad will appreciate the time and effort you put in to create a homemade gift. Think about your dad's hobbies and interests to help you choose what theme to use in your crafting. Homemade gifts can be useful as well as attractive, so try giving Dad something he can use often to remind him of your love.

If Dad likes to drink beverages from cans, he will enjoy a can cooler to keep his drink cold and his hand warm. You can buy foam drink holders from the craft store, or buy craft foam and cut it into a strip that is as long as the circumference of a can. Bend the strip into a cylinder and use hot glue to secure the seam. Cut out a circle of foam the same size as the bottom of a pop can and hot glue it on the inside of the cylinder. Make shapes of tools, baseballs, cars or whatever Dad likes, and glue them to the outside of the cooler.

Caterpillar Memo Holder

Buy a metal spring three-quarters of an inch wide and two springs 3/16ths of an inch wide. Paint a 3-inch by 6-inch piece of plywood whatever color you desire. Gently pull the ends of the larger spring so there are small gaps in between the rings and cut it to about 4 inches long using wire cutters. Snip the small springs to about 1 inch long and wind the ends around the first ring on the long spring. These will be the antennae. Weave a ribbon through about every third ring in the long spring and pull it tight. Glue the ribbon to the plywood.

Paint two paper or Styrofoam coffee cups with gold paint and glue the bottoms together with craft glue. The inside of one cup should also be painted gold. Tape the opening shut on a small box, such as a macaroni box, and paint it gold. Poke gold pipe-cleaners or gold chenille through the cups on each side for trophy handles. Glue the rim of the cup that is not gold inside to the box. Cover the opening of this cup with a circle of construction paper if the glue is not holding the cup on the box. Cut out a label that reads, "No. 1 Dad" or "First-Place Dad" and glue it to the side of the box.

Thoroughly clean any type of jar that has a lid. Paint the lid with acrylic paint in gold or silver. Gather peanuts in their shells that are not cracked or broken and paint them with the same color paint. Use craft glue to stack the peanuts in an arrangement that will fit on top of the jar. A pyramid works well. If there is any obvious glue, cover it with paint. Glue the nut structure to the top of the lid and make a label that says, "I'm nuts about you, Dad!" Fill the jar with Dad's favorite type of nuts.
