The guidance center is a service provided in most high schools that helps students deal with personal and academic issues. The guidance counselor has training in helping students with their future career and education plans and can help them apply to universities. The counselor may also help students experiencing personal problems.
Career Information
The guidance office should be well stocked with information about universities, colleges and continuing education. The office may also want to provide career information as well as road maps for certain careers. In addition, the office should have resume resources, books and support materials for resume writing.
Assessment Tests
Assessment tests like the Myers Briggs and other career and personality tests can provide valuable information for students about their skills and abilities. These tests can give insight to the students as to what jobs or types of professions they may best be suited for. Taking assessment tests allows students to get to know themselves better.
Personal Problems
The center should also supply information and resources for problems the students may be experiencing. Drug and alcohol addiction, abuse (mental, physical, sexual), sexual health and diet and nutrition are all relevant topics for teens. The center should have plenty of literature so that curious students can get all the facts and help they need.
Waiting Room and Private Offices
The waiting room should be well-stocked with the aforementioned materials and they should easily be accessible to students who are coming in for an appointment or just looking for information. The private offices should be private. They should be relatively soundproof and not visible from the outdoors (blinds or shutters may do the trick.) Students who are experiencing grief or some other issue should be entitled to privacy and not subjected to the stares of other students in the office.
