This means that gross vehicle weight ratings are higher than gross vehicle weights because the former is the maximum while the latter is an average estimate.
Differences
Small sedans tend to have a gross vehicle weight of around 3,000 pounds. Pickup trucks, which are on the other end of the spectrum, have a gross vehicle weight of around 12,000 pounds. This means that a pickup truck can carry more when it is at capacity than a compact car--but it also weighs more while empty.
