Trees squirrels look similar to ground squirrels and chipmunks, though they lack spots and stripes. Tree squirrels are most active during the day and do not hibernate, so they may run around in your trees throughout the year. Squirrels are pests because they may cause damage to fruits, eating all the fruits of your garden labor. Your goal is to protect your fruit trees from squirrels with safe methods that won't harm the trees or fruit. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Place fake predators in tree to discourage squirrels. Fake hawks and owls will resemble natural enemies to squirrels. Alternately, place crossbeams 6 to 8 feet high on the property to attract real hawks and owls. Hanging fake snakes from tree branches may also work to thwart squirrels from fruit trees.
2Use large garden shears to trim back branches that are near roofs or telephone lines, places where squirrels find easy access to fruit trees.
3Block entrance sites with sheet metal or wire hardware cloth, sealing off small gaps under eaves, overlapping areas of the roof and knotholes that might allow squirrels to get into buildings.
4Cover frequently attacked areas of fruit trees with plastic netting.
5Place squirrel traps in the trees or rooftops if the problem persists. Before placing traps, check to see if a hunting license is needed to kill squirrels in your city/county.
6Cover fruit with paper sandwich bags, securing the opening with twist ties. Remember to check fruits regularly to see if they've ripened.
