What Foods Cause High Potassium?

Potassium contributes to healthy blood levels, muscles and nerve function. Everyone needs it. Most foods contain some amount of potassium, so it is not difficult to replenish potassium levels should there be a deficiency in the body.

Symptoms of Potassium Deficiency

    If the body is low in potassium, some symptoms may include nausea, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, cramping, weakness and more.

Causes of Potassium Deficiency

    Few people get potassium deficiencies, because potassium is present in so many foods. However, there are some things, such as vomiting, excessive sweating, diarrhea and certain medications that may lead to low potassium levels--for instance blood pressure medication or diuretics.

Fruits and Vegetables That Are High in Potassium

    Many fruits and vegetable have high concentrations of potassium. Fruits include bananas, oranges, avocados, papayas, mangoes, pears and cantaloupe. Vegetables include mushrooms, spinach, potatoes, asparagus and Brussels sprouts.

Other Potassium-Rich Foods

Sweet Potassium-Rich Foods

    Surprising but true--molasses and chocolate are also good sources of potassium. Molasses has high levels, while chocolate has medium levels.
