Diet of the Moche

The Moche were people who lived on the northern coast of Peru from 100 to 800 A.D. They were a society of farmers and fishermen ruled by warrior-priests, according to Mesa Community College, and their diet consisted of fish, shellfish, crops and wild plants.

Farming and Fishing

The Moche farmed crops like maize, beans, sweet potatoes, peppers, avocados, squashes, coca and tropical fruit, according to the book "The Moche," by Garth Bawden. Their diet also largely consisted of anchovies and other fish from the ocean.

Climate

The Moche lived in an area that was extremely vulnerable to swings in weather conditions. They irrigated their crops from mountain runoff, and river sediment supplied their soil. They were not prepared for climate changes brought about by El Nino weather patterns.

Downfall

Floods, erosion and long periods of drought in Peru resulted in widespread food shortages, political unrest, competition for farmland and water, and eventually brought about the downfall of the Moche.
