What Are the Breads to Eat on a Diet?

What Are the Breads to Eat on a Diet?

For the weight conscious, bread is often a concern. If you are struggling with giving up bread in order to lose weight, you may not need to worry. Nutritionists generally agree that including bread in your diet is healthy and can contribute to a reduction in body fat, especially if you choose whole-grain products, which have more fiber, vitamins and nutrients than those made from processed flour. So go ahead and eat your bread, but be wary of the kind you choose.

Light Breads

Oroweat Bread offers a bread alternative with their Sandwich Thins. The sandwich thins are bread rounds that, as the name implies, are very thin, reducing the amount of bread you consume with a sandwich. They come in a choice of 100% Whole Wheat, Honey Wheat, Whole Grain White, Multi-Grain, and Seedless Rye. All varieties contain 100 calories per serving, which is two thin rounds. The bread has no trans fats and no high fructose corn syrup. These sandwich rounds are a low calorie alternative to traditional bread choices for the diet conscious.

Pepperidge Farms also offers Deli Flats, similar to Arnold's Sandwich Thins. They come in Soft 100% Whole Wheat and 7-Grain varieties, made with 100% whole wheat flour. All varieties contain 100 clalories per serving making them a low calorie bread choice.

Another option is Pepperidge Farms' Light Style and Very Thin breads. These breads have between 40 and 45 calories per slice. They come in whole wheat, seven-grain oatmeal and white bread choices. The Very Thin Whole Wheat bread is the only one of these that is 100-percent whole wheat, increasing the nutritional value along with the reduced calories.

Whole Grain Breads

Pepperidge Farms has a line of whole-grain breads to offer consumers. Their whole-grain breads are low in fat, have no trans fat, contain 4 grams of fiber, have no high fructose corn syrup, and are made from a variety of whole grains. These breads are 100 calories per slice, so even though they may include good nutrition in the whole grains, you need to be aware of the calories.

Oroweat has a 100% Whole Wheat Bread, Double Fiber Bread, Honey Whole Wheat Bread and Triple Health Bread, all made with 100-percent whole wheat. The breads have no trans fats or high fructose corn syrup, making them a healthy choice for good nutrition.

Homemade Breads

If you are interested in making your own bread, Bob's Red Mill brand 100% Whole Wheat Bread Mix is a good choice. It makes a dense, heavy bread that is recommended by the South Beach Diet. It can be used in bread machines, or you can make the bread by hand. It is made with stone ground 100-percent whole wheat, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, honey and molasses. Each 1/2-inch slice has 170 calories, so if you are counting calories, it may not be the bread for you. However, the whole-grain nutrition may offset the calories somewhat.
