Introduction
Part of being diabetic is learning how to control your blood glucose levels. Having too high a level of blood glucose can be dangerous. In fact, regardless of whether you have diabetes or not, it is important to keep your blood glucose levels controlled to help keep you as healthy as possible.
Low Glycemic Index
The first way to lower your blood glucose levels is by eating foods that are low in the glycemic index. The glycemic index ranks foods by looking at how the carbohydrates within the food have an effect on your blood sugar. Foods lower on the glycemic index usually digest slower, keeping your blood sugar steady while still feeding the body the energy it needs to keep running. Choosing foods lower on the glucose index will naturally regulate your blood glucose levels, and will help bring your blood sugar down to the right amount.
Exercise
Even if you don't lose weight, exercising can dramatically help lower your blood glucose levels. As you exercise your muscles become more sensitive to the insulin your body is producing. As an effect of this sensitivity your muscles start absorbing more glucose. As the muscles absorb the glucose, the amount of sugar within your blood flow decreases. This causes your blood glucose levels to decrease.
Medication
If you are having a hard time manually trying to lower your blood glucose levels, you may want to talk with your doctor about increasing your insulin. Increasing your insulin use will help keep your blood glucose levels lower, helping you stay more balanced. While doing this you will need to be careful to watch for the development of insulin resistance due to the increased dosage.
Relax
Relaxing can naturally cause your body to produce more insulin. The natural insulin will help your body absorb glucose and lower your blood glucose levels. Take control of your stress by learning breathing techniques, or taking a yoga class. A yoga class will do double duty as it increases your exercise levels and helps relieve stress.
