Following a high protein, low carbohydrate diet is not difficult when you understand which foods contain protein, and which can contain both carbohydrates and proteins.
Pure Proteins
Animal-based proteins are the highest sources of proteins available. They also contain all nine of the essential amino acids which the body cannot provide for itself. These are foods such as: white turkey or chicken meat, fish, eggs, pork and lean beef.
Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are also good sources of protein, while being lower in carbohydrates. Peanuts, soynuts, almonds, flax seeds and walnuts are all good high protein choices.
Combination Foods
Hamburgers, often made with a mixture of proteins and fillers such as breadcrumbs, can be high in protein but also high in carbohydrates. Foods such as breaded chicken or fish will also be higher in carbohydrates as well as proteins.
Low Fat Bonus
Meats that are highest in protein are usually the leanest, and as a result are those that are lowest in saturated fat, which is the kind of fat that should be avoided. As a result, high protein diets can also be lower in fat.
Warning
There is still controversy surrounding the safety of low carbohydrate, high protein diets; check with your doctor prior to beginning any new diet or food regimen.
